Remembering Mitch
Even as a kid, I knew funny. I was raised on the
Smothers Brothers, Spike Jones, and Bill Cosby. I remember
buying my first comedy album. In the 6th grade I bought
the cassette tape "Robin Williams - Reality...What a Concept".
I wore that sucker out. Before long, I could recite it
line for line. I can remember making copies of Steve Martin, Cheech
and Chong, and George Carlin. Comedy has always been a big
part of my life.
One of my favorites was Mitch Hedberg.
I first saw Mitch on Comedy Central Presents, and I was hooked.
I scoured the peer to peer networks for any clips. He
released 2 albums, "Mitch All Together" and "Strategic Grill
Locations", and made many appearances on David Letterman, Howard
Stern, and Craig Killborn. Time magazine called Mitch "the
next Jerry Seinfeld" (a rather heavy burden to carry, I would
imagine). Mitch made no secret of his recreational drug
use, such as "I used to do drugs...I still do, but I used to
too". On March 28th 2005 Mitch was found dead in his hotel
room, initially reported as heart failure, but subsequently it
was a reported drug overdose.
Mitch was one of a kind and will never
be replaced.
